What seems like such an inexpensive commodity has been used since pre-historic times as medicine, currency (known as white gold) and as an enhancer and preservative of food. Like many other expensive, important, and useful molecules during that period, salt has had a major influence in our society, while its been in global trade or in social and political control. Human beings, throughout history, have had three main sources for salt: sea water salt, brine salt, and rock salt or halite. The manufacturing of salt is either done by mining or by the evaporation of salt water. Sea salt is obtained by the evaporation of seawater, but it contains magnesium and calcium chloride in which gives it a different taste from halite and brine salt. Brine is water saturated with a salt and would be pumped into pans and then it will get concentrated by the heat of the fire. Halite is the mineral form of sodium chloride from dry oceans or sea beds, usually identified as rock salt. These three techniques used in ancient times are still used in today’s modern world. When some countries started to produce greater amounts of salt, it became important for them to make a profit from other regions that lacked the substance. This is how the trade of salt turn out to be a huge lucrative market. In that time the Romans made a “salt road” called Via Salaria to transport salt to the coast of Rome, while the Sahara desert was an excellent contributor of salt for northern African countries as well as European. The demand for salt was accountable for its taxation. It created wars, rebellions and debates between countries. Salt, sodium chloride, is an ionic compound. The structure of sodium chloride is composed of positively charged sodium ions and negatively charged chloride ions. Salt is a dietary necessary for human life because sodium is necessary in generating electrical impulses in nerve and muscle and in generating gradients across cells to enable uptake of nutrients. It is a vital mineral needed for optimal bodily function of nerves and muscle movement. Too much or too little salt in the body can lead to health problems like cramps, high blood pressure, to loss of weight and appetite, and many other disorders.
