Antibiotics... i remember when my mom always made me drink them though I had no idea what it was for. Our so called 'antibiotics' aided people in a very huge way. It mostly increased the life expectancy of people over the years. Also, humans increased their survival rate due to the continuous development of medicine. The great influenza pandemics resulted to a huge loss in the population (20 million). So, Edward Jenner demonstrated some viral immunities. Because of that, the fear from fevers and some sickness decreased. Saclycic is similar to a sugar and is very effective in reducing fever and relieving pain, but in exchange, it's irritating for the stomach. Today, Aspirin is the most common pain reliever. (though i only know it by name). Alexander Fleming's penicillin was stronger than phenol in terms of medical stuff for bacteria; however, it is now easily inactivated due to today's medicine. I believe that its somehow unethical to test these medicines to humans, but if it could save someone i guess it could be fair. These penicillin trials caused 2 deaths but on the third try, it was a success where it cured blood poisoning. That success carried on until our time and is continuing to save more people's lives.
William Perkin might have his eyes on making a dye, and so he did! however, he didn’t know what else he did form the dye Perkin’s made; an aspect that could save millions of lives. Pharmaceuticals, an aspect of synthetic organic chemistry, which would change medical practice forever. In 1856, the life expectancy was around 46 years. 10 years later the life expectancy went up to around 76 years; that a 30 years difference. Something has to have caused that big boost. We are not talking about 10 years but 30 years! Well the medical field had excelled; antibiotics had entered the picture. In the early days, medicine consisted of herbs and organic compounds. Many soldiers during the civil war died from bacterial infectious. However antiseptics procedures decreased these deaths. The number of deaths was lowered in the 1st world war. Although antiseptics helped an infection to not start but, it didn’t do much, after the infections had started. The influenza pandemic, which occurred from 1918-1919, killed more than 20 million people. The main reason was secondary infection of bacterial pneumonia. Once a person was declared having this sickness they were given a death sentence since there was nothing to be done. In ancient Greece, extract from willow bark was something that could help relieve fever and pain. Salicylic acid came to be very special; it not only reduced fever it also reduced pain but it also acted as an anti-inflammatory. Bayer company had invented aspirin in 1899. Bayer company purchased as much phenol they could get to make aspirin. Aspirin is still used today for all sorts of medical purposes. Along with aspirin being used as pain reliever, it is also use to prevent strokes. The symptoms for mercury poisoning were: hair loss of teeth and kidney and liver failure, along with many other dreadful symptoms. Sulfur drugs which saved many lives were later known as wonder drugs. After sulfanilamide was introduced the number of death caused by pneumonia dropped really fast. Before the production of antibiotics, if a person had a major infection he or she would have to get infected limb amputated. During WWI thanks to antibiotics, there were less amputations taking place and more lives being saved. Antibiotics are mostly used to kill bacteria. Even tough sulfur drugs saved many live and were “big” in their time, they were stopped being used because of the bad qualities it comes with. Sulfur drugs have long tern side effects, which could result into something really bad.
