After the evolution of the spice and sugar trade, a more demanded product was also depending on free labor, this is where slavery came into place. Cotton became an important source to, mainly England, Europeans and early Americans. What they used to do was ship raw cotton to England, make inexpensive manufactured merchandise to be exchanged for slaves in Africa. While English workers worked in dangerous cotton factories the invention of the cotton gin made the process easier for them, as well for slaves in the other side of the Atlantic. After the invention of this revolutionary machine more modern machinery were being installed. Cotton fabric was the new attraction for fashion. That’s why people requested this material to be able to make comfortable clothing and furniture. But there is more to cotton, the traits in which cotton is made up of is from the structure of cellulose. Cellulose is the most common organic compound that exists and it is mainly obtain from cotton. Although humans and mammals aren’t able to metabolize cellulose it is referred as a dietary fiber. This is where the structural polysaccharides take place in supporting the organism and storage, β-glucose and α-glucose. Another fact about the utilization of the cellulose molecule is the discovery of guncotton, nitrocellulose, also the photography and the movie industry began with this chemical.
*-*Hamza shah*-* With so many things being introduced, sugar came along. Even though sugar was one of many compounds that helped the slave trade, cotton came in the picture later, but excelled the slave trade at a very fast rate. Cotton became famous; cotton was being transported, cotton gins and mills are in productions, and slavery was excelling. Although things were looking good for the English people, people or Africa were being torn apart, and were brought to the new world and were turned into slaves. Since cellulose can only be obtained from cottons, that makes cotton irreplaceable. Unfortunately cottons is not edible, because our bodies can not break the compound down. When cellulose is dissolved in concentrated nitric acid with some water, it forms a white powder, and that powder is highly flammable. Nitrocellulose was one of the first explosives ever made, knowing that, an organic factor can be made into an explosive substance is a little opaque. Since cotton is 90% cellulose and gun usually is known as a typical explosive agent, the white powder came to know as, guncotton.
!!Glucose becomes sweetness!! One smart fact I learned - glucose has six carbons and twelve hydrogens atoms. I know sugarcanes are sweet. but i didnt know that sugar can actually be tken out from the sugarcanes. What really stood out to me was the amount of slaves being shipped -50 million-not counting the ones who died on the middle passage trip! It's crazy how ambition and money were powerful enough to exchange humans for "ore from mines". What i learned was that you can draw sugars like glucose in a straight line but what was interesting was that it can also be written in a "cyclic" form like a ring. When it comes to the "cyclic" from, I learned that the OH at carbon # 1 can be above or below the ring. When the OH is below it is known as alpha(a)-glucose. When it is above, it is beta(b)-glusoce. Whats i wonder is, why do certain African tribes are missing the lactase enzyme that every human being should have?
A crop that depended on slavery was cotton. the cooton trade that rapidly expanded first in Britain. It was sort of like money becuse cotton would be traded for slaves. It also came in handy to all those poor people that needed money because there was alot of factories that would hired people in need of a job. People working in this factories wouldnt get pay alot but there was no other choice left for them rather to just work long hours and get paid only half of what they work.sometimes this workers wouldnt get paid money but rather get goods and they couldnt said anything. Cotton is made up mostly of cellulose,at first i didnt know what it was but after i read i learned that is a polymer of glucose and a major component of plant cell walls.
Sugar production promoted slave trade in many ways because people started using sugar as a sweetener more and more and the demand of sugar was so high but very few people wanted to work hard on the fields to produce it. So many people decided to buy slaves to work on the fields producing sugar knowing they would make a fortune out of the product without having to pay the many slaves a cent for their work. While reading this chapter I found out that cotton consists of 90% cellulose…I also found out that when you dissolve cellulose in concentrated nitric acid, it forms a solution and when you pour this solution into water, it forms a highly flammable and explosive powder.
