In this chapter rubber is the key component for the mechanization business. Rubber and rubber products have been essential in our everyday life since its exposure to developed countries. It was in the Central and South American region where it was first believed it was used by Indian tribes. When Columbus sailed to Hispaniola, he took some of the plant gum balls back to Europe. Then many after him went back to search for this, never seen, material. This new substance, natural rubber, is originally derived from latex, found in sap of many tropical trees and shrubs. For instance, plants that are associated the Euphorbia family, such as the guayule, rubber plant, wild rubber tree, hevea brasiliensis and many others, are large makers of latex. It is surprising how the chemical structure always plays a fundamental part into the substance exclusive properties. Natural rubber is a natural polymer of an unsaturated hydrocarbon called isoprene. Another thing was the cis double bond that occurs when the molecules attach to one another at the ends. The rubber molecules are cross-linked with each other by heating the liquid rubber with sulfur. Cross-linking increases the elasticity and the strength of rubber. The process was generated accidently by Charles Goodyear. Throughout history, rubber has had a huge impact while in hard times as well in good. It has transformed the lives of many in a short period of time with a variety of items made, either with synthetic or original rubbers.
Rubber was used for decoration. Isoprene = repeating 5 carbon atoms for Isoprene, wastes can be useful as Charles Macintosh used naphanta (the waste) to convert rubber to a coating for fabric. Due to this, once again, it benefited humanity because it gave birth to water-proofed coats and shoes for protection from rain etc. I was convinced that even people who aren't chemists like Charles Goodyear can experiment on molecule alteration or rubbers making his own discovery with heat and sulfur. Since Isoprene coils and produces cross-links (repetitive), it results to rubber elasticity. Heating was necessary for these cross links that's why it gave way to Goodyear's discovery. Benefits? Rubber gave society benefits like exploration since rubber is primarilu used in rockets and shuttles. I truly think rubbers are that important because i can see rubber everywhere, which proves that it's essential to mankind.
It’s weird how even though sometimes we have things that are helpful we don’t use them for example in chapter two I found out that people already knew some remedies for scurvy disease and they did not use them they would rather let people keep dying. Even though people did not dye or suffer any disease because of rubber its weird how rubber has been around mankind for hundreds of years and only in the last century and a half is that rubber has become an essential component to our civilization. By reading this chapter I found out how natural rubber is formed…when isoprene molecules add to one another on an end to end fashion, natural rubber forms.

He made some good points but they were incomplete, he never gave an example of how " rubber has been around mankind for ..." I liked the fct that he understood the process of making rubber and summed it up, in his own words and it seems he understood the process.
I wanted to add that what caught my attention while reading the chapter was the fact that the original golf ball was wooden!!I also learned that natural rubber is also a polymer of the molecule isoperene - it has only 5 carbon atoms.

It gutta-percha or balata are exposed to air the harden, really fast. But is they are kept under water, they stay the same. Gutta-percha was used for many reasoning including medical purposes. Well, as time passed and people found more, better things about rubber in 1223 Charles Maintosh, used naphtha to convert rubber into a pliable coating. This research made rubber more usable and better. Even though rubber coats and other garments were made, the “rubber fever” came along to mess things up. Although the “rubberized” pretends was waterproof, people came to writing that it would become iron hard in winter and it would turn smelly glue line like in the summer. These really hurt the Rubber market. Many people were experimenting with rubber and how it could become “The perfect rubber like product”, one of those people was Charles Goodyear. Charles Goodyear was a risk taker and a hard worker. He never knew why sulfur and heat made that kind of an affect on rubber. The elastic properties of rubber are the reason how its chemical structure is how it is. When Goodyear added sulfur and heat to the natural rubber he created new bonds. And creating enough o0f theses bonds kept rubber flexible and “perfect”. The more sulfur there was the harder the rubber became. As people found out about this new quality of the rubber, the demand of it increased immensely. This new product was mostly obtained from the Amazon rainforest and only about 1% of the tress obtained it. Rubber had created another type of slavery which was held in the Amazon rainforest. Like any type of slavery, the workers worked from sunrise to sunset and they were paid poorly, and they couldn’t back down. Their was no way out for these worker, it was like hell in a cell for them. 98% of rubber later started to be produced in Asia and United States needed much more rubber than what they were importing. As the US were updating and industrializing the country, Japanese attacked the Pearl Harbor. With rubber in mind US knew, if they don’t get a good amount of rubber nor only their economy will crash but they would lose the WWII. With that said the idea of extracting natural rubber from different plants which were frown in the states. Chicle a similar product to rubber was offered to the US from Mexico, as rubber. Since the people buying the product didn’t check it, they had no idea that the rubber was a fake.
